British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC)
The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) is the worldââ¬â¢s largest public service broadcaster that was founded in 1992 with the aim of educating, entertaining and enriching the public with information conveyed through broadcasted programs. The expansion and success of BBC can be attributed to the business-level strategies that the corporation implements from the time the company was established to present. BBC was able to incorporate strategies into its organizational culture which ensured it gained competitive advantage. The corporation gave its organization a unique identification mark that was appealing to customers when it opened stand alone stores that were highly visible, provided ample parking space and located the stores in urban areas which contain large numbers of potential customers (Hill & Gareth, 2004). Moreover, the corporation identified its customers, their needs and thus implemented strategies that were geared towards satisfying their demands. For instance the c orporation offered a wide variety of tapes a fact that ensured BBC met the desires of its customers. The corporation was also able to manage a long lasting relationship with its customers by devising a strategy that allowed customers to stay longer with the rented movies a mechanism that helped the corporation to further fulfill the needs of its customers (Hill & Gareth, 2004). Furthermore, BBC offered and enhanced superiority value to its organizational culture and reputation by employing efficient strategies which allowed customers to access the tapes easily and at a faster rate by arranging them alphabetically and separating new movie releases from the older ones. The corporation also incorporated advanced technology into its operations which allowed customers to have a comfortable and easy time while at the store, for instance the use of the laser bar-code scanner technology to access required information from the movie cassettes and customersââ¬â¢ ID tags thereby consuming lit tle time of customers (Hill & Gareth, 2004).Although the corporation has managed to open and successfully run BBC branches globally it was also faced with challenges that forced it to close down some of its stores this is because of the improper market research strategies the corporation implemented to learn and get acquitted with the market environment, the likes and dislikes of prospective customers. For instance BBC was forced to close down the stores it had opened up in Hong Kong and China because the profitability of the corporation was challenged by piracy which is highly ranked in China because of poor implementation of patent policies and regulations.BBC was also forced to close down the stores it had opened in Germany because the corporation was unable to fulfill the desires of the consumers that demanded provision of movies and programs which contained violence and sex rated captions in their themes, demands that were against the principles and policies of the corporation (Hill & Gareth, 2004). In 1927 the British Monarchy granted the Corporation a Royal Charter protecting itââ¬â¢s independence from the manipulation and influences of private and governmental sectors a fact that enables the organization to cater fully to the needs of its customers. The products and services provided by BBC are original because of the opportunity that the charter prevails of allowing the corporation to be innovative thus providing products that are of high quality. BBC is also able to easily penetrate into the global market where it widens its scope of customers and utilizes the resources prevailed to maximize its operations, performance and profitability. However, BBC must enact public value in all its operations and has no control of members appointed to run the corporation because the appointments are done by the Queen under the advice of ministers. Since it is a state corporation, BBC can not make decisions that are geared towards benefiting the organization witho ut considering the welfare of the society like private sectors do (Hill & Gareth, 2004). English Literature Essay
The ââ¬Å"Infant Sorrowâ⬠is a short, two stanza poem featuring a young baby who is in fear that his mother and father do not love or want him. The young baby first feels sorrow when, ââ¬Å"My mother groanedâ⬠, here the baby is feeling like his mother does not want him although she could me ââ¬Å"groaningâ⬠about a number of things. The mother could already have a lot of children and not want to bring another up into the world or she may not have enough money, the ââ¬Å"groaningâ⬠could also however be due to the pain of child birth. The young baby then sees his father, ââ¬Å"my father weptâ⬠this is also a feeling of loneliness for the child. But as with the mother, the father could be crying for a number of reasons, the ââ¬Å"weepingâ⬠of the father is not tears of joy as in innocence it is tears of sorrow. This initial sorrow is loneliness and neglect, this is because of the mother and fathers reaction to its birth. The second feeling of sorrow is helplessness, the baby feels helpless in the world, this should not happen because the mother and father should help and look after it. ââ¬Å"Helpless, naked, piping loudâ⬠, using the word ââ¬Å"Helplessâ⬠suggests that the new baby feels vulnerable, which is extremely experienced for a baby. Using the word ââ¬Å"nakedâ⬠shows embarrassment for the baby. It shows that the baby is feeling insecure and without warmth. The choice of words used by the baby are experienced throughout the poem, they all show the sorrowed feelings of the baby during child birth. b) How do language and form communicate the emotions expressed in this poem?à The emotions expressed in this poem are all experienced; there are feelings of sorrow, depression, loneliness, and vulnerability from the baby.à In the first stanza the words ââ¬Å"groanedâ⬠and ââ¬Å"weptâ⬠are used to show the emotions of the parents; however they can be interpreted in many ways. When the baby talks of the dangerous world it has just entered it suggests ââ¬Å"leapingâ⬠, this could mean that the baby has been pushed into an experienced world and situation, this could also be a reason for the mother and father to be upset about the birth. The baby refers to itself as ââ¬Å"a fiendâ⬠, an experienced word meaning a cruel wicked and inhuman person, this shows that the baby has strong emotions of neglect from its parents. The whole of the first stanza symbolises the change of state for the new born baby, it changing from being in the womb to being in the dangerous outside world and having no one to look after it, ââ¬Å"helplessâ⬠. The opening stanza also shows that the real world is a dangerous place to live in, it is unpleasant and un secure for the baby. In the second stanza the baby is talking about its true feelings and again how its mother and father are reacting to it. Throughout the poem we know that the fat her is in control, he has power over the new born baby, we know this from phrases such as ââ¬Å"Struggling in my fatherââ¬â¢s handsâ⬠, suggesting that the fathers hands are controlling the baby. The baby also talks of ââ¬Å"swaddling bandsâ⬠, in the past these have been seen as ways to keep your baby close to you and wrapped up tightly to create the atmosphere of being in the womb, however here ââ¬Å"swaddling bandsâ⬠are used to symbolise restraint and control of the father and separation from the mother completely. In innocence, a baby is suggested to be a gift from God, something to admire, look after and love, however, in experience the baby is seen as corrupt, in ââ¬Å"Infant Sorrowâ⬠the baby is hidden away, ââ¬Å"Bound and wearyâ⬠To end the second stanza the word ââ¬Å"sulkâ⬠is used, normally the word ââ¬Å"sulkâ⬠would be linked with children or teenagers, youths mainly however here the baby uses ââ¬Å"sulkâ⬠to describe its own emotion. This shows a sign of rebellion on the babyââ¬â¢s behalf, the baby has simply given up trying to fight against these feelings of hatred from this mother and father, ââ¬Å"To sulk upon my motherââ¬â¢s breastâ⬠.

History Of Bloodstain Patterns Essay
Function of bloodstain pattern analysis Bloodstain pattern interpretation/analysis has been around for many years but has only really been recognized in the past several decades. This interpretation/analysis is like a very important tool that an investigator or forensic scientist may use to help them better understand what happened or what did not happen in a case where there was bloodshed. Discoverable through the examination of bloodstain pattern The information that can be discovered or obtained when examining bloodstain patterns can help in apprehending a suspect, corroborating a witnesses statement, interrogating suspects, allowing for reconstruction of past events and lastly but probably the most important exonerating an accused. All bloodstains can provide important specifics to an event that occurred during an incident, so they are always examined. This is a very crucial part of an investigation, but it is never 100%, errors do occur. ââ¬Å"Static Aftermathâ⬠There is such a thing called ââ¬Å"static aftermath.â⬠What an analyst evaluates is the static aftermath of an event; the shapes, volumes, patterns, number and size of bloodstains and their relationships to the scene. Timeline of bloodstain pattern analysis Surprisingly to me the study of bloodstain patterns has been going on since the 1800ââ¬â¢s. On the following page is a time line showing the history of bloodstain patterns interpretation/analysis. Symbolism on why people wear figuritive masks in front of others Essay
Symbolism on why people wear figuritive masks in front of others - Essay Example Since most of my old high school mates have moved away, I will instead visit the Westfield Gateway Mall. Since malls do not change much I expect to see familiar scenes during the night. I will take notes on a notebook which will include all activities which seem familiar and new ones that seem interesting (Metz and Mauk, 34). I will then use the most interesting of my notes to write my invention essay. My only concern in writing g this essay is that since the Westfield Gateway Mall is such a large place I may miss many interesting and new things due to lack of time. I visited the Westfield Gateway Mall one evening in order to make my observations. The Westfield Gateway Mall is packed with lines of cars in the huge parking lot. The doors are made of creative designs which seem to invite you into the bowels of the mall. The building gives off different feelings from its decor. The side of the building ranges from bumpy to smooth while the lights are in a variety of luminous green and y ellow to deep azures and purple. The mall is located within the Los Angeles District. The people, the places and the decor comprise what is the essence of Westfield Gateway Mall. Many different activities take place within the mall though not all are in plain sight. It takes an observant eye to see some of the subtle hints. I walk into the inviting sliding doors and head to the food counter attracted by the sweet aroma of fried chicken. As I walk inside I can instinctively sense eyes boring into my back though I meet turned heads when I turn around. I stand in line next to a teenage couple who canââ¬â¢t stop whispering into each others ears. Well the guy canââ¬â¢t stop talking into the girlââ¬â¢s ears while the girl seemed to have an absent look yet pretended to giggle at his every word. I get my burgers and head to a shiny table to savor the environment. Eating my burger, I look up at the numerous tables spread around the eatery and the kids screaming and scampering all ov er the place. At a table next to me are two ladies who were chatting while the husband talked on the phone with a blank look. I got interested in the blank look of the husband and started analyzing it more. It seemed to me that the husband was merely playing down the seriousness of the conversation for the sake of his wife. It seemed as if he was saying something he did not want his wife to hear though he did not want to leave the table as he was afraid of arousing suspicion. Meanwhile a birthday party is going on full swing at the corner of the eatery. One of the women pretends to be unconcerned when the children run to the party and attempt to grab the pieces of the cake. She wears a face of nonchalance though it is obvious to me that she is embarrassed at her childââ¬â¢s behavior. This is proved by the fact that she seems rooted to her seat and makes no attempt to go to restrain the misbehaving child. In the meantime I notice a waiter who I guessed to be in his mid twenties cl eaning out tables as patrons depart and come in. A family of three with a teenage daughter was seated two tables away. I observed the teenage daughter cast furtive glances at the young waiter though she vehemently denied any such thing when the father reprimanded her. This reminded me of my childhood memories when I was reprimanded for truancy and denied it yet it was clear for all to see my guilt. I go and lean on a railing to watch the steady stream of people coming and

Social Welfare Democracy and Government ( Social work) Essay
Social Welfare Democracy and Government ( Social work) - Essay Example In effect, in a democratic system, the right to vote is an entitlement for each citizen because the government processes are based on the will of the people. Since not all citizens can be allowed to carry out government processes, a representative voted by the people would be the next best thing for a democracy. Inclusion is also about being made a part of the process. In the democratic scene, inclusion is an important element because it helps ensure that the conceptualization and implementation of policies encompass all members of society (Young, 2002). Therefore, in the process of ensuring the adequate implementation of democracy, everyone who is entitled to vote should do so because it allows them to be included in the democratic processes and it helps ensure that the spirit of democracy is carried out to its fullest extent (Young, 2002). Representative democracies are very much founded on the rule of the people as supported by the election of government officials. In the history of the United States and in other representative democracies, during our early years, only free white males were able to vote and in some areas, these voters had to be property owners as well (Bardes, Shelley, and Schmidt, 2008). Women were not allowed to vote in the elections; and in the US, it was only until the 1920s when they were finally granted the right to vote. Today, the right to suffrage is universal. Since all votes count equally, regardless of gender, ethnicity, and economic standing, the only way to make fair decisions is to submit to the majority will (Bardes, Shelley, and Schmidt, 2008). In order to ensure that majority rule does not become oppressive, provisions to protect the right of the minority groups have also been set forth. If no protection is granted to these minorities, the majority might end up violating the fundamental rights of other minority groups (Bardes, Shelley, and Schmidt, 2008). In effect, it is important for everyone to vote in order to ensure th at their right is represented and protected; in order to ensure that even if the majority rule would apply, the rights of the minorities would still be represented in the bigger picture. In order to guarantee the continued existence of a democracy which represents the will of the people, there must always be free and competitive elections. Therefore, the opposition can have an equal right to win the elections (Bardes, Shelley, and Schmidt, 2008). In order for elections to be totally free and open, freedom of speech and of the press must be respected so that opposition candidates can present their constructive criticism against the government (Bardes, Shelley, and Schmidt, 2008). Even as all citizens must have the right to vote, there may be certain restrictions to the exercise of this right. These restrictions are based on legal and proprietary provisions which are part of the democratic processes of different countries. In the United Kingdom, laws provide for certain criteria by wh ich citizens are qualified for the right to suffrage. First provision is that only individuals whose names appear on the electoral register are allowed to vote (Electoral Commission, 2006). In order to vote in the UK Parliamentary elections, the voter must be 18 years of age or over on the day of the elections. He must also be a British citizen, a Commonwealth citizen or a citizen of the Irish Republic who is residing in the UK. Finally, he must not be made

The concerns will be with regard to population in the Research Paper
The concerns will be with regard to population in the - Research Paper Example According to the pilot issue of Horizon: Future Issues for Development, in an article entitled ââ¬Å"Population Growth, Environment and Food Security: What Does the Future Hold?,â⬠human population growth is ââ¬Å"the most significant causeâ⬠of many of the problems that the world faces like climate change, poverty and scarcity of food resources. By around 2050, the growth of the worldââ¬â¢s population will be by 2.7 billion thus resulting in an estimated total of 9 billion people by that time (Collodi & McCormack, 2009). This significant increase in the human population will definitely outrun the supply of natural resources and will definitely force man to exploit the natural environment for the sake of survival. In the table below from the United Nations Population Fund, one can see that the projected population of the world by 2050 is either 7 billion still, or 10.5 billion as the upper limit, or ideally at 9 billion. One of the problems caused by overpopulation that will most likely affect the world on a global scale is environmental degradation. The overwhelming growth in population is expected to lead to unsustainable demands on the environment as well as natural resources. There is also a consequent production of hazardous waste and an intensified level of urbanization, both of which are expected to contribute to the degradation of the environment. There is also climate change due to the increase in the amount of greenhouse gas emissions by around 52% by 2050. Aside from this, water is expected to be scarce, and that 90% of freshwater supply will be gone even by 2030. Moreover, there is also an expected doubling of the demands for energy all over the world even 20 years from now. There is also a considerable loss of biodiversity, destruction of many ecosystems, and renewable environmental resources because of excessive draining of wetlands, clearing of forests and expansion of infrastructure (Collodi & McCormack, 2009). Another global problem

Transition from Military to a Democracy Rule in South Korea Research Paper
Transition from Military to a Democracy Rule in South Korea - Research Paper Example This paper considers the process of successful transition from a military dictatorship regime to a democratic led nation in South Korea. It attempts to study that process and give an explanation to success of that transition, that brought economic prosperity to the country. The history of the path to democracy in South Korea began in the year 1945 when the country liberated itself from colonial rule by the Japanese. Economic development was envisaged to pick soon after. However, the postcolonial period saw a shift from Japanese led colonial leadership to an authoritarian rule, also referred to as a strong state. This shift was mostly fuelled by political divisions in the period after liberalization and the Korean War. The continued authoritarian rule elicited country wide protests, which continued to gain support and momentum as the strong state ideology also continued to widen and deepen. The protests were in favor of democratization, with the protestors demanding the adoption of democracy in governance, and consequently formed a resistance union, called the democratization movementââ¬â¢s resistance. Increased confrontations and resultant clashes between the pro democracy and the authoritarian rule parties led to the start of the journey to democracy which was characterized by a series of movements. These include the 1960 revolution which took place on April 19th, the uprising of 1980 popularly known as the Gwangju Popular Uprising, and lastly the 1987 June Democratic Uprising. The direct and democratic election of Kim Dae Jung as president of South Korea in 1997 propelled the country into a state of political and economic stability signifying the strong correlation that exists between democracy and economic development.
Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) Research Paper
Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) - Research Paper Example This paper illustrates that EEOC is under the mandatory obligation to monitor compliance and enforcement of Title VII under Civil Rights Act, 1964 along with other federal civil rights. Civil Rights Act, 1964, Equal Pay Act of 1963 and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 are some such practices of EEOC that prohibit discrimination at workplace based on a range of factors age, nationality, ethnicity, gender, etc. Title VII of Civil Rights Act entails race, color, origin, gender, and religion as protected groups which show evidence of discrimination and the laws of EEOC are intended to protect employees and potential employees against discrimination. EEOC recommends that employees of all public-private firms are protected by federal laws against discrimination. In this regard, Title VII of Civil Rights Act, 1964 prohibits discrimination in terms of race, color, religion, sex or national origin in hiring, promoting, discharging, payment, fringe benefits, among other aspects of e mployment. The amended version of The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 protects employees, present and prospective, with disabilities in hiring, promoting, and other aspects of employment. For protecting discrimination based on an age of above 40 years who are the applicants or employees, The Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967 is handy to ensure equal opportunity. Also, Title VII of Civil Rights Act, 1964 and The Equal Pay Act of 1963 prohibit sex discrimination where women and men are paid different wages for the same work in the same organization. Further to this, all federal laws prohibit any retaliatory action by an employer in cases of filing of charges of discrimination by the employee, and it can amount to serious offense of the laws. Diversity at the workplace is practiced to ensure that individual differences are recognized and acknowledged to create an environment that is diverse and innovative, and which utilizes the contributions of the diverse backgroun ds of its employees. In the diverse workplace, EEO policies apply in addressing the disadvantaged groups prone to discrimination in terms of age, race, etc.

Is there a need for reform in Albany Term Paper
Is there a need for reform in Albany - Term Paper Example and corruption matters that occurred in the State legislature in the past two years and the kind of reforms that the Governor and the legislature has put in place to address the matter. The paper then describes the legal and policy structure of the adopted reforms and the public criticism that this has generated. The paper then concludes by giving recommendations to the Governor and to the State Legislature to restore the public trust (Katz). Although there are numerous cases of corruption in Albany, the most pointed cases have been in the legislature. In a recent scandal, the senators from Buffalo state George Maziarz as well as Patrick Gallivan purportedly spent $ 140,000 and $ 80,000 respectively in time they were in office. In this particular case, the problem was not in the spending of the money itself but the fact that they did not find it fit to report their expenditures. Apart from Senatorsââ¬â¢ George Maziarz and Patrick Gallivan being investigated, the now defunct Moreland Commission was also investigating state Sen. Diane Savino of Staten Island for alleged mismanaging of campaign funds. These two cases are a clear indication of the rot in the stateââ¬â¢s Legislature (Frisch). In light of the corruption allegations within the state, Governor Cuomo set up the Moreland Commission (now defunct) to address the allegations. The power to form this commission comes from the Moreland Act, a legislation that gives the Governor the authority to set up a panel to look at waste in the government and to come up with recommendations for reforms. Upon setting up the committee, Attorney General Schneiderman offered to deputize the commission something that bolstered its powers. This was because his presence had accorded the commission a wider legal reach than the current powers that were contained in the Moreland Act (Medina). For Governor Cuomo, there is need to develop a campaign finance system that incorporates the option of public financing. The call for this reform

Research paper - Essay Example Hemingwayââ¬â¢s statements were short and direct, then there are parts that reflect the way the main character was thinking; Hemingway did not waste too many word explaining, and I liked that. Maupassantââ¬â¢s story was so memorable because it is true today as it was during his time, that people can be just as hypocritical. For the poems, the more memorable ones are ââ¬Å"Facing Itâ⬠by Yusef Komunyakaa and ââ¬Å"We Wear the Maskâ⬠by Paul Laurence Dunbar, because of their courage and outspokenness at a time of bigotry and racial hatred. Sometimes, I mentally place myself in their shoes, and I am unsure whether or not I could be as brave as them. Because of their writings, our literature is all the richer and lessons of history better preserved for generations to come. Yes, I had shared my assigned readings with friends and family, and they were visibly touched by some of these. The poetry evokes a different set of sentiments for each reader, depending upon their pe rsonal experiences. Among the writing techniques I found the most challenging is systematically writing my analysis of short stories. The framework of the literary analysis is specific and highly structured. I also found it diff

Funnist Incident in Classroom Essay Example for Free
Funnist Incident in Classroom Essay Alright so it was an ordinary day at school, and I was going to my locker in between fifth and sixth hour for the school-wide locker clean-out. I didnt have much to clean, I just emptied my locker of a few homework assignments that seemed to be hiding in the back. So I was done cleaning and I went to my sixth hour class, which really isnt much of a class as it is independent study. Its just me and these two kids from New Delhi who are in seventh grade and take pre-calculus. Well, the room I go to for sixth hour is a science room, so there are a few safety apparatuses to use, just in case: There is an eye wash station if you get chemicals in your eye and a ventilation wood if youre working with things that give off fumes. The last safety device is the safety shower, which is nothing more than a slight depression in the floor where there is a drain, a showerhead overhead, and this metal rod thing that you pull which releases an enormous gush of water. I think you use it if your clothes get on fire or if you accidentally spill chemicals on yourself. Anyhow, I was walking around the room, reading some science comics that were plastered to the wall. Well, I happened to slip on a rogue piece of cardboard that was lying on the floor, and I was spiraling out of control right towards the safety shower. I had no other choice, and plus I was a bit disoriented because I was spinning, so I grabbed on to the metal rod to stop myself from falling and WOOOOOSH A hundred gallons of cold water come down all over me! Im standing their soaking wet, not knowing what to do, and finally the teacher walks into the room and nearly drops his coffee. I was sent to the nurse and she gave me a big towel to wrap myself in. The nurse called my mom to let her know what happened, and she picked me up from school about twenty minutes later. The worst part wasnt me getting wet, oh no. When I activated the safety shower, the door to the classroom was open, and you could see me directly from the doorway! There was a whole crowd of people outside the adjacent classroom, and they started laughing ! I was so embarrassed!

My Papas Waltz Analysis
My Papas Waltz Analysis Upon first reading the poem titled My Papas Waltz by Theodore Roethke, a negative opinion could be formed. Due to some of the words in this poem, it is understandable why this kind of reaction could be evoked. Further analysis and critical thinking allows one to better understand what the writer may really mean. In the first line of the poem, The whiskey on your breath is descriptive enough to produce an image in ones mind of a man who is drunk. The words of Could make a small boy dizzy further illustrate the strong intoxication of the man. It is often not in good taste when an intoxicated adult presents him or herself to a child. The poem could be interpreted as a depiction of a childs experience of abuse from his father. But I hung on like death seems to convey a childs terrible feeling from having to face a drunken father. The image painted here is that of a child and his father waltzing around the house with the boy having to hold on like death. The word death could have been use d to emphasize the helplessness of the child against his drunken father. Indeed, a child waltzing with a drunken father could be a difficult task, as described in the line Such waltzing was not easy. My mothers countenance could not unfrown itself seemed to prove that the action of waltzing with a drunken father was inappropriate and causing a disruption. Breaking down the meaning of could not unfrown, one may conceive a thought of a mother who could not stop frowning, meaning the mother is unhappy about the situation and also perhaps about her husband being drunk. In the line We romped until the pans slid from the kitchen shelf, this could indicate how the mother disapproves of the situation, for the child could get hurt and also because her kitchen is a mess. The hand that held my wrist was battered on one knuckle. The battered in this line is often a word that describes abusive situations. At every step you missed, my right ear scraped a buckle. The word buckle could be related to a belt buckle. This idea could add to the scenario of a father beating his child with a belt. The beat time on my head is another line that might lead the reader to think that the father is abusing t he child. The words that Roethke chose in describing the scene produce pictures of a violent kind of waltz. In this interpretation, the waltz was not a joyful one. The poem employs a sad mood and a somewhat satirical tone, suggesting that the person remembering his childhood is critical of his father. The smell of the whiskey, the roughness and the inconsiderate, reckless actions of the father were scrutinized and criticized. But there is another analysis of the poem that reveals a different line of ideas. The poem for others conveys a message contrary to the first impression that is often formed. The other interpretation of Theodore Roethkes poem suggests it is a dance, hence the name of the poem, My Papas Waltz. For other readers, the poem has evoked good, past memories. For example, an older man through the poem remembers his father who was a hardworking employee. A particular scenario could be the instances when his father would walk into their home after a days work with scraped hands. His father was a strong and tough man, yet a good man who provided for the needs of the family. For that person, the poem is a particular memory of a child that stood among the rest. This was a story of a boy reminiscing that instance when his father had returned home from work one late evening. He happened to be in a celebration along with his co-workers at a local pub. He excitedly waltzed while entering his home, an d proudly picked up his son, swinging him around in a dizzying waltz. Father and child playfully danced and wrestled in the living room, hence making this poem funny for some readers. A kid dancing with a drunken father would make readers think that the child is having fun with his dad. Topping the funny scenario is the expression of a mother getting peeved of whats going on in her kitchen: We romped until the pans slid from the kitchen shelf. The father and son romping typically arouse this kind of reaction from every mother, with her being the lady of the house. This is a positive bonding experience between a father and child and particularly between a father and a son. The poem is said to employ a winning tone that is light and almost comical. The constant rhythm throughout the poem endows it with a light beat like a waltz. It shows that the child was very fond of his father. Though the poem starts in a serious tone, it progresses into a playful one, reinforcing the caring regard of the child to the father. He really valued his father and the hard work that he did to provide for the familys needs. The line With a palm caked hard by dirt, then waltzed me off to bed, still clinging to your shirt suggests the loving bond between a son and his father. Through it all, the poem in its simplicity of delivery has managed to produce two completely different reactions. One either interprets the poem with a negative implication or a poem with a positive implication. A persons judgment would depend mostly on the experiences, the cultural, social, and psychological background among others of an individual. A boy indeed needs this kind of experience from his father for him to see not just the strong, matured, and responsible nature of his father. It is a joyful experience for a child to see his or her father in a light and playful mood, particularly when he has alcohol in his system. The poem does not explicitly state that the child is being beaten and physically hurt by the father. There is just this free-spirited form of dancing that could bring no harm to a boy. It is funny and sweet to be able to see a father out of his usual tough and matter of fact persona. It brings him closer to his children.
The Changing Role Of The Teaching Assistant Education Essay
The Changing Role Of The Teaching Assistant Education Essay A brief history into the changing role of the teaching assistant. Due to the governments 2003 initiative to change the staffing structure within schools, the role of the Teaching Assistant has changed significantly in recent years (Pugh, J. 2007) and has, in turn, led to numerous publications and studies concerning the effectiveness of these changes on childrens learning. Historically, teaching assistants, or auxiliaries as they were sometimes formerly known, were non teaching adults who helped qualified teachers by carrying out day to day preparatory and administrative tasks and providing pastoral care to children. (Clayton. 1993) However, in 1998, the Local Government Chronicle published a summary of a Green Paper, (1998), in which they outlined proposals for employing a greater number of support staff 20,000 by the year 2002 in order to provide more support for teachers. The summary also announced the governments suggestions for a more effective use of, and better training for, teaching assistants and other school support staff which, along with a subsequent OfSTED review (2002a, p6) declared the need for training that would, match any proposed structure of qualifications and to facilitate career progression. Working as a teaching assistant thus became a career and so began the real debate about the role of the teaching assistant. During a UNISON conference on Building a World Class Education Service Estelle Morris stated that: à ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã ¦teaching assistants have a vital role to play in our classrooms (Morris, 2002, cited in Unison, p.2) But what does that role entail? As with many job titles within the working environment, the title teaching assistant is often interpreted in a variety of ways but one common theme I have encountered, when questioning educational staff, is that all teaching assistants are facilitators of learning and therefore are essential elements in the promotion of learning for children. How the facilitation is carried out, however, is less clear and open to individual interpretation by both employers and employees. The ability of an individual to enhance a pupils learning experience depends on many factors and will often be decided by the environment in which they are employed. Through personal experiences I am convinced that a school which values the contributions of its support staff will provide professional development opportunities and will, therefore, create a valuable resource that will support children, teachers and the school itself. Supporting teaching and learning A teaching assistants role is to support the learning of all children. In order to do this they, like any educator, need to have a good understanding of how children learn. In the book, Teaching and Learning in the Early Years, Whitebread (2008, chapter 1) discusses Piagets ideas that children need to feel and hold control over their learning. Whitebread continues by exploring Vygotsys claims that it is the role of the adult to provide opportunities for social interaction and to support the child in moving out of their comfort zone or level of actual development and towards their potential via their zone of proximal development. To do this, a teaching assistant must understand how to promote curiosity amongst children while providing opportunities for discussion and exploration. With current class sizes in the region of up to 30 pupils, a class teacher will often be unable to engage in this vital aspect of developing childrens learning and so it is essential that supporting adults ar e equipped with the skills to scaffold learning and to provide opportunities for them to develop the language needed to be able to discuss and explain their ideas. (Bruner 1983, cited in Peabody Journal of Education, pp 64-66) Just recently I was fortunate to be part of an initiative to promote reading amongst a group of reluctant male readers who had, for unknown reasons, formulated an opinion that reading was a chore to be undertaken with animosity and only when instructed to do so. My role was that of the enabling adult as described by Chambers (1991). By providing them with an opportunity to share and discuss each others reading experiences I was able to, over the course of only a week, unleash in them a willingness and enjoyment of reading. The outcome of this quickly became apparent in their understanding of written text. The children also began writing with enthusiasm, using their own knowledge and experiences; as a result, they are in control of their own learning. The children feel empowered by the fact that they are directly responsible for the progress that they are making and continue to enjoy our weekly discussions about their reading and progress. The children mentioned do not have special educational needs, as is often the case for pupils being supported by a teaching assistant. Children with SEN require a higher level of support and this has, historically, been provided by teaching assistants. (Alborz et al, 2009a) This has previously been an area for debate with The Daily Telegraph (2009) publishing an article claiming that research shows that, Pupils make less progress in classrooms where schools employ more teaching assistants. This article states that teaching assistants often support lower attaining pupils, resulting in them being less supported by a qualified teacher and to them making limited progress. The article does not, however, take into account the training of the teaching assistants. While reviewing the impact of workforce remodeling, a report by OfSTED (2004) stated that when a teaching assistant is appointed to work with carefully chosen pupils and is provided with the training to do so effectively, the pupil s make significant progress. This is, of course, as well as the obvious benefits of providing the teacher with more time to focus on other pupils. Having worked alongside several teaching assistants employed to support children with SEN I have witnessed the immeasurable benefit to the pupil and the class as a whole. The teaching assistants enabled the pupils to be included in a mainstream classroom and access the curriculum, while allowing the class teacher to support the majority of the pupils. Their support involved the re-enforcing of the whole class teaching, giving the pupil the confidence to participate in class discussions, simplification of vocabulary, offering praise and encouragement and feedback on the completed task. Following the lesson, the teaching assistant also provided the teacher with assessment and monitoring feedback to enable assessment of and for learning. This assessment has become a vital aspect of the role of the teaching assistant and supports the teacher and pupil by enabling differentiation and personalised learning to become every day practice. (OfSTED, 2002b) Guidance published by the NFER (2002, cited in DfES, 2005, p.22) found that when teachers and teaching assistants work together the results are a more effective level of teaching and learning. An example of this is a scenario I have experienced recently where a teaching assistant supported the learning of the majority of the class while the class teacher focused on the children with SEN. As a result of the teacher and teaching assistant having spent time working together to plan the lesson, the teaching assistant was able to support the learning objectives and assist pupils in their achievement of them. Teaching assistants can also, when included in the planning of a lesson, actively participate in the delivery of the lesson providing an alternative viewpoint or by playing a character in role. One such example was provided by my colleague who, upon realising that many of the pupils within the class had misunderstood a key concept, pretended to be confused and raised a hand to ask for clarification. As a result, pupils developed a clearer understanding of the lesson and therefore, the teaching assistant had played an important role in developing their learning. By implementing a mixture of all of these approaches and with effective training and guidance, teaching assistants can provide invaluable support for all children within any lesson. Teaching assistants also support behaviour management within classes and can provide an alternative level of perception within the classroom. In daily Literacy lessons, I have observed a teaching assistant supporting a pupil with ADHD and have no doubt that without her presence, the class teacher would have to spend a large proportion of the lesson settling the child and addressing low level distractions. Personal experience has shown me that children with emotional and / or behavioural difficulties are often more responsive towards a teaching assistant with whom they can forge a positive adult / child relationship. This can contribute towards the social and emotional wellbeing of the child as outlined by Alborz et al. (2009b). Supporting the teacher and the school Besides the opportunity to support childrens learning during lesson time, teaching assistants continue to carry out a multitude of administrative tasks in order to support the class teacher and the school as a whole. The National Agreement, (ATL et al. 2003, p.2), implemented as part of the governments workforce remodelling initiative, states that teachers should not spend their time carrying out administrative responsibilities that do not make full use of their skills and expertise but that these tasks should be carried out by support staff. The agreement outlines twenty-one tasks that teaching staff should not be required to carry out including the preparation of classroom resources, photocopying, the collection of monies for educational visit and the preparation and setting up of displays. These tasks must also, therefore, be considered the responsibility of the teaching assistant. Each and every one of the administrative tasks has an impact on the educational environment and ther efore contributes towards supporting the development of childrens learning. In practice, however, the need for teaching assistants to be more involved in the delivery of lessons surely means that they too will have less time for carrying out administrative duties which in turn might relay these duties back into the hands of the teachers. In my experience, teaching assistants often offer unconditional support for the school in which they are employed. Many carry out duties beyond their working hours attending extracurricular events and regularly being at the forefront of fund raising activities. They frequently are able to provide a connection between local communities and their schools as they often live in close proximity to their workplace. This is a non essential yet valuable part of their role as it enables teaching staff to be aware of local issues and provides a link between parents and schools. (Lipsett, 2008) In summary, the role of the teaching assistant is a developing one, consisting of providing emotional support for pupils in their care and using knowledge and skills to assist in the development of childrens learning while maintaining an excellent level of support for both the teacher and the school community.

Marriage :: Literary Analysis, Gregory Corso
Gregory Corsoââ¬â¢s poem ââ¬Å"Marriageâ⬠is a beautiful, comic poem. The author is the main character and he is thinking about his future and the possibility of him getting married. He is trying to deeply think about all the possible scenarios he might face, he tries to think about the right decision to take in regard of him getting married or not getting married. So he takes a scientific approach to the dilemma, he first lays out all the possible options he has, and then he simulates every decision in his mind and tries to realize its consequences. Corso opens his poem by a question to himself ââ¬Å"Should I get married? Should I be good?â⬠this line suggests two possible interpretations. The first interpretation is relating being good as a result of getting married. The second interpretation is giving two options cannot go together, either being good or getting married. By only the first line Corso was able to set two perspectives on marriage. Corso talks about the girl next door and how he would astound her and go out on a date with her. Corso will not follow all the traditions while dating this girl, for example, he will take her to cemeteries instead of taking her to the movies, then he will kiss her and try to make love to her, but she refuses. He gets angry, but he does not show it, and he tries to convince her to sleep with him ââ¬Å"You must feel! Itââ¬â¢s beautiful to feel!â⬠(Line 7) Corso says, but she still refuses. Then Corso starts his backup plan to ponder about the bright constellation in the sky . What a genius! When Corso meets her parents he feels so uncomfortable. He tries to look very educated gentle man, so he does not ask where the bathroom is even though he wanted to use it. He realized traditions have set these stupid rules for him to follow if he wanted her parentsââ¬â¢ approval. Even when he gains the approval ââ¬Å"Say All right get married, weââ¬â¢re losing a daughter, but weââ¬â¢re gaining a sonâ⬠(Lines 21-22), he was not sure whether to ask for the bathroom ââ¬Å"And should I then ask whereââ¬â¢s the bathroom?â⬠(Line 23). He shows his disgust from peopleââ¬â¢s actions around him when he gets married. He describes the priestââ¬â¢s look at him as I he was doing something bad ââ¬Å"he is looking at me as if I masturbatedâ⬠.

More Than A Feeling-Intuition And Insight :: essays research papers fc
More Than A Feeling By definition, intuition is the inherent ability to connect with one's inner self. It seems as if as time goes by, intuition is thought of less. This is likely due to the lack of education and understanding of this peculiar ability. Yet some people believe that everyone has intuition. Few people actually experience it. Many dismiss the fleeting hunches and gut-feeelings as coincidence. Those who do believe in the intuitive powers of the mind think it comes in many different forms. For example, a stressful situation may cause one to become frantic and worried. As if they "know" everything will work out, another person may handle that situation differently. That is what believers feel is a natural ability derived from instinct. In our Western society of cell phones and fax machines, many of us ignore our natural instinct. In fact, some have already had an intuitive experience. The experiences can be anything from a feeling that something will be good or bad, a feeling that we need to pay attention or that something is wrong with someone, or even deja vu. Most of the time, we ignore these intuition and we use our reasoning and logic instead. Although reasoning and logic are very good for solving our Smith 2 problems, our intuition may provide us with the answer to that problem more helpfully or accurately "Intuition is knowing without knowing why you know," says Laura Day. For some people, this is easier said than done. Intuition may be difficult to grasp for some due to lack of frequency but, many things can be done to improve the occurrence and quality of intuitions. For example, those people wishing to better their intuition perform relaxing activities. Those activities could include sitting by a body of water, staring at a relaxing fire, visualizing something relaxing or listening to a calming sound. This quiets the sound that constantly echo in the minds of humans. This is when we realize our intuitions. In his book "The Celestine Prophecy", James Redfield tells the story of a man who travel to the Peruvian rain forest in search of his friend Charlene. This man come to discover a group of people in search of what they call "The Nine Insights". On his journey, he meets many people who help him to get in touch with his intuitive side. The character was periodically put in a setting where he had difficulty figuring out a problem or getting out of trouble.

Demonstration and Narrator States Essay
The story of Ligeia describes a man who meets a women in which the circumstances of are filled with hallucinations and mystery. The existence of Ligeia starts to come develop as the narrator starts fixating on her erratic learning, rare beauty, and the care for language. The narrator describes the first encounter with Ligeia in Germany, in which he states,â⬠Yet I know that I met her most frequently in some large, old, decaying city near the Rhine. â⬠(Belasco, Johnson pg. 1021). The narrator states he think he meets her in Germany, in which he states he doesnââ¬â¢t remember much. The narrator demonstrates hallucinations and an altered state of mind with his visions of Ligeia. For example, the narrator explains that he met Ligeiaââ¬â¢s family, but he canââ¬â¢t recall their name. The narrator describes Ligeia as a tall and thin women, whose days were emaciated. (1021). The narrator describes her voice as a sweet and low and face like an ââ¬Å"opium dreamâ⬠. (1021). Ligeiaââ¬â¢s hair was described as looking like a raven and her skin as white as ivory. The visions of Ligeia comes from light and darkness that the narrator uses to conflict the two metaphysical traditions. The narrator describes Ligeiaââ¬â¢s features with ââ¬Å"strangenessâ⬠, in which her most distinguishing feature was her curly hair, in which her eyes matched. Ligeiaââ¬â¢s image is described in a mysterious way in which the narrator blisses his memory of her exquisiteness. The narrator also describes Ligeiaââ¬â¢s language and learning skills, in which helped him understand the world of theoretical studies during the first years of their marriage. The visions of Ligeia grow stronger as she gets ill and the narrator reads a poem which describes the natural disaster of life. The poem describes a theater where angels have come to see mysterious movements which are controlled by outside manifestations. The presences of the outside presences during the poem demonstrate mystery and darkness. After the death of Ligeia, the narrator gets remarried to Lady Rowena in which he gets a Gothic art piece in which his wife is frightened of. The narratorââ¬â¢s second wife begins to get sick like Ligeia and the narrator begins to think that death is forthcoming. The death of Lady Rowena brings flashback memories of Ligeia to the narrator and how obsessed he was for the love they once had. The gothic bridal chamber that Lady Rowena is in has Ligeiaââ¬â¢s sensuality in the creation of the chamber so the narrator can remember her. The visions of Ligeia demonstrate irrational beliefs as where she returns alive in the bridal chamber in which the narrator scared of the rebirth of the corpse. Although Ligeia died, the memory of her stayed in the mind of the narrator. The return of Ligeia demonstrated that the narrator lost his sense of reality and the manifestation of her signifies that the vision of Ligeia is more physical than just a memory.

Gender Roles in Sports Essay
Gender Roles in Sports al bearings since the beginning of the Olympics Games in Greece in 776 B. C. , wo workforce pick up incessantly been put on the top burner when it comes to sports. To this twenty-four hour period there argon very noticeable differences in wowork forces sports comp bed the reputation of mens sports. Women and men kindred experience their inequalities in sports. For example, of you were to ask a group of muckle what they would rather assure womens basketball or mens basketball widely distributedly speaking the majority of the group would favor ceremonial occasion mens basketball. On the contrary, virtually individuals would rather pursue womens synchronised swimming as opposed to mens synchronized swimming. Sports and all things entangled argon a business. Men vie professional sports tolerate nonrecreational drastically much than than women courseing professional sports. It would be exceedingly un c atomic number 18ly for a adult fe manfu l to get paid a 60 million dollar contract everywhere six years like a man in professional sports would. harmonize to www. therichest. org, soccer counter David Beckham is currently outlay 219 million dollars. He do 40 million dollars last year.If you compargon that to the highest paid womens athlete, Maria Sharapova, who made over 25 million dollars, this occurrence proclaims that caramels remunerate drastically more to test males to play professional sports. According to www. therichest. org, the ten highest paid professional womens athlete made 113 million dollars over the past twelve months, up save one percentage from the year 2010. The ten highest paid, professional male sports athletes collectively made 449 million dollars. The soil they set up the Olympics Games like they did in 776 B.C. , by not allowing to participate or scour vigil, is because the spectators commanded to only engage the strongest, fastest, and most durable to play and even witness the game s. The games were a tribute to the Grecian God Zeus. The people of Greece wanted to envision Zeus the best of the best in their gild. People dont want to entrance women play sports just like they dont want to watch dumb people play cheating or jeopardy. Its logic, not sexism. When you watch the WNBA the most exciting thing you see is a backwards layup or a no look pass. When you watch the NBA, you see a man doing trey hundred sixty degree spang dunks and all kinds of other cool tricks that by reputation appease the like of their fans. The dynamic posture of men doing what women cant ineluctably draws a larger crew. Contact sports especially stick out a really addictive and enticing nature around them that womens sports simply dont substantiate. All these aspects of contact compulsive sports are masculine, testosterone driven traits that are unlike the nature of women. This is the main reason their appointment is absent and men get the hang the sports fans wants. Gender in equality in sports has ever so been a growing conundrum up until June 23, 1973 when President Nixon signed human activity IX. This truth was a huge supremacy for women in the fight for equality in sports. The integrity prohibits sex discrimination in any education program or activity within any unveiling any type of Federal financial assistance, according to Duffy. This was womens graduation exercise take on to gain legal equality in sports.Women didnt just get equality from this law, but they also got opportunity for equality. This law addressed the historical discrimination women curb faced ever since the beginning of the Olympics first came about in 776 B. C. on that point is no womens professional football game group or any kind of football league for women. Men are not interested in watching women play the types of sports that men are always deprivation to be better at. The only exclusion is womens football where they play wearing away lingerie its si ck how society works like that. The NBA is in a lock out as this written report is being typed. You can see the march on on the news every day. If the WNBA were to be in a lockout, the chances of it being on the news every day is highly unlikely. There are in fact sports that women are becoming more fashionable in like golf, gymnastics, figure skating, volleyball, and tennis. These sports full complement the shape of a womans body. Also, figure skating, volleyball, and gymnastics are sports the women are especially better at collectable to their elegant figures and different bone structure. The stars of these sports are portrayed as gamy, curvy, graceful, and radiant. Men who are famous with sports like basketball, football, baseball, and soccer are known to be strong, dominant, and masculine. The thought was that if women participated in strenuous activity that they would damage their reproductive organs, which would ultimately not fulfill an mirthful belief that the primary r ole of women in society was to shed children and care for the men, perceive from the thoughts of Murphy. Women in society in general are the face of modeling and sexy images.Commercials, advertisements, and every day television programs have sexy women comprise with whatever it is they are trying to sell. This works the same way with them in sports. Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition has a whole lot of sexy women posing in skimpy swimwear. That goes the same for the sports theyre involved in that are popular. For these reasons, women dominate those sports which lead to their popularity when it came to people watching them. Theres always the stereotype that women are lesbians or dikes for playing sports that require seemly physical strength and endurance. For instance, bodybuilding has always been a mans sport. Women are always thought to be powder-puff and when you see a woman who is at least twice your size judgments go through the roof not only with the judges, but with the a udience as well(p). In Jennifer Banas topic of Women Athletes in Male predominate Sports, she speaks her mind when saying, Now, the contestants should be judged on muscular tissue tone of the body right. Wrong. In place to restrain which women has the best and most well defined body, the judges feel compelled to define body in relation to women. Recalling a time there was a young woman at my old high train that graduated and went on to join a volleyball team at a college. After her first visit home, she was utterly disappointed to find her peers had started a record about her that she was a lesbian and thats why she joined the team in the first place. It broke her heart to get that type of support, or lack thereof, from the people she grew up with who fully knew she was never a lesbian. Football is another example of this. If a woman decides she wants to become a football player, she should not have to worry about what her peers are going to say or think about her.She should nt have to worry about being called those name calling like lesbian and dike if she wants to be a football player. When it comes to being in these competitions with lady football players, the judgments are a bit skewed and distorted delinquent to the fact that men are typically associated with strong and large muscles. So when spectators have to look at a womanish figure, that has the typical aspects of a males figure, it can be a small(a) confusing. The assumptions and discrimination still goes on to this day even if there is a law prohibiting it.It has been an issue since sports were first celebrated on a large scale in Greece 776 B. C. Although society is slowly but certainly progressing towards a more open-minded pick up when it comes to sports, there is always going to be a gap when it comes to overall crowd appeal. Mens sports are more interesting to watch simply due to the fact that they are better, faster, stronger, and intense. It all boils low to the money, and mens sports generate more money. For these reasons gender inequality will always be a persisting paradox in sports. Work Citied Page Duffy, Felice M.
